Right so now it's time to explore a bit - just next to the minster is the market - its full of crowded little roads, full of tearooms which the city is famous for. Mostly, they look like this -
And they're full of the strangest shops (one sweet shop where i bought a bag of some boiled sweets and demolished them in 36 hours flat) and then, there's the shop of, well, miscellaneous items, i suppose - and the most brilliant chess sets. Note the price tags. That's right, I'm never going to OWN one.
Zimbabwean dancers performing on the street. Not too sure what thats all about, to be honest:
Right, so the river Ouse runs through york, so this is a picture i took across it. Note the ray of sunshine i have captured so brilliantly on my beautiful K850i (these are all phone-cam pics, btw). Following that, some ruins of something (i don't quite remember what. pretty, tho)
Right, so York, which was once the capital of the Northern province of England (source: wiki) was taken over by William the Conqueror, and he set up the city walls to protect the city(source: Manasi Subramanian). Walking along those is brilliant. Here goes:
Okay so these are the archaic buildings in york - but guess what, some of the everyday buildings dont look all that different either..
A sandwich bar, left, and finally, a PUB, right!
So this is the view from Manasi's room. How unfair is that???? (All I have in Sheffield is a fucking skylight, where the occasional passing cloud is about as exciting as it gets)
The university is stunning. The ponds in the area are full of ducks - apparently the university has the highest duck to student ratio in england (again the source is manasi) and this might seem a dubious distinction, but really, there's something awfully cute about the ducks. Apparently they get quite happy when there are people around. Soon after a took the first picture below (left) the lot of them came by to investigate...
Ducks are not the only friendly fauna around - we encountered a couple of horses in a field - and they suddenly decided to amble up to us. I guess we could have done many things in that situation but we chose to retreat to the safety of a (fenced) neighbouring field.
On the otherside of that fence, a cemetery i think for professors in the university and the like.
And finally, from the train station, you can see this giant ferris wheel, which manasi says is called the eye or something because you can see the whole city from the top. i clicked dutifully, but my heart wasn't in it. i was heartbroken.
i was leaving york.

The cemetery is not for professors in the University! We don't have THAT many dead professors! It's called the York Cemetery and it's for local people. Some famous ones too, I think.
You missed Silver Man and Yellow Man and Illuminating York!
The ruins are of the old cathedral in the Museum Gardens, and it's called the York Eye, by the way.
thanks manasi, what would i do without you.
ya i didnt actually get a snap of the yellow man, and i got an awful snap of the silver man - and didn't get a pic of illuminating york at all, cos i didnt turn off the flash! that's one i really regret cos that would have been brilliant.
btw, are any of the pictures not being displayed?
ach, jealously be me.
jaysus, the duck ratio? what kinds of knowledge she's stuffing herself to the gills with..
what's the duck ratio in sheffield? hm? hm?
yay, that was the whole purpose of this blog, to make people back home jealous. that way maybe people will think i actually LIKE this benighted country.
in sheffield, the only animals are the undergraduates. tons of them about, tho.
monsters.
the university has the highest duck to student ratio in england
Now I've heard everything.
abhinav,
I could see them all when I refreshed the page. I'll send you the snaps I took at Illuminating York if you're interested.
eyefry and bobo,
We're very proud of our ducks, thank you. They make us famous. Yes, they do.
famous how? New Yorker famous or Youtube famous?
nutters, the lot of you... but eyefry and bobo, you need to meet the ducks mate. they're incredibly endearing!
bobo,
I quote from a BBC website:
"Being built around a lake, the university has a great deal of wildfowl. If you have a terrible phobia of ducks, York is not the university for you. In fact, killing a duck is an offence which will see you expelled, while if you kill a person, you can return after your prison sentence is complete! A well-known and rather gruesome campus story concerns a Chinese1 student whose cleaner discovered a pair of duck's feet in his bin. It turned out that he had caught, killed and eaten one of the campus ducks."

The Marx brothers would've terribly unpopular at York.
been*
gah.
as i said on bobo's blog....someone seems to be back?
lordluvaduck as they say, that was one fun story. by the way, i think bombay duck is some kind of a fish or fowl isn't it? just in case none of you knew. thanks abhinav and that lovely wench in one of the pics must be our manasi.
ram
i note that the subject of ducks is still of interest here, in spite of the various pics of sweeping grandeur that i've taken.
oh and manasi, you've completely put me off rubbish bins. not that i was into them before, but now...
oh and were the marx brothers into duck? i didn't get that at all
and vaporising phantasm... yes, im back, and here for good! :)
yes the lovely wench sweeping the wind tossed hair from her face on the city walls of york, is indeed, manasi. pretty, isn't she?
ok this isnt a conversation i should be having with my dad.
geez, it's like finding a half eaten mouse-child (little mouse? mouselet? baby mouse?) in my roommate's dustbin last year.
reading that quote, i first assumed laundry bin and went 'ewww'. heh. silly me.
awwww, that pic of the wench didn't load earlier. isn't she lovely. indeed she is. i must have been distracted by the ducks.
doesn't this feel like a little tea party now?
Wench?! Me?! But I blush at the several compliments, although I do not believe them at all.
I think eyefry's comment on the Marx Brothers was to do with Duck Soup. Yes, eyefry?
bobo, Good to know that ducks are capable of distracting you from me.
thanks bobo, thats really made my day. no more laundry either.
oh and manasi, you're either being modest or underconfident. which are you? WHICH ARE YOU???
oh and this is getting very comfy i must say. not sure if i'm dreading or waiting for eyefry's comment (if indeed, he hasn't abandoned the party in despair)
Hi! My name is Project 71. Weird name I know, but my masters are weird too. My masters apologize for such an out-of-context comment and they know how painful such spamlike comments are. But, say masters, how else are we to present something good to the world. By that they mean me :D. Kindly see what I am about. Won't take you more than 22s to read... http://www.project71.com/readme Enjoyy!
Those were lovely pictures Abhinav. Look forward to some from Sheffield, including your own.
Ram
aww, so what are you going to do in sheff now? sit around with a pile of garbage in your dirty undies?
manasi, if i'm not mistaken, as she once told me, is simply horrid at accepting compliments.
manasi -
ducks and marmots, my only vices. void those two, and i've got only you in mind. :P
abhinav: refer to manasi no.4 (which sounds like chanel no.5, more so considering all the wenchiness going around...)
manasi: go to the head of the class.
would you be refering to "bobo, Good to know that ducks are capable of distracting you from me." ?
missed that one. heh.
abhorigine,
am in the middle of compiling one, tho somehow i feel less touristy here since i live here, but will get some for sure.
yeesh, honestly, she makes me sound like a stalker. didn't think i'd acquired that status until after coming to bangalore.
but what kept running through my head was a line from Dark City. to paraphrase to this context, 'I have Manasi Subramaniam in mind.' of course, doesn't do anything for you if you haven't seen the movie.
well, im afraid if this doesn't make you sound like a stalker, your latest post would definitely remove all doubts.
SO YOU MAY AS WELL ADMIT IT! is what i'm saying
bobo and abhinav,
Honestly you kids! eyefry was talking about the fact that I actually GOT his Marx brothers reference (Duck Soup), which, abhinav, you had asked about. Really. (shakes head)
i prefer the other version
manasi -
whaat? i never questioned your getting of the reference.
abhinav -
pfft.
Sheesh.
Very nice dude. But really Manasi has contributed so much to this post, that ideally she should be accredited as one of the co-authors.
Hmmmm.... Anyway. Those photos were on the Sony Ericsson...???damn my bloody Nokia...nevermind.
captain,
not sure if the k850i is launched in india yet (it wasnt when i was there), but its the latest in the sony ericsson camera stable - has a 5 MP camera, and a very decent flash.
its a beaut.
A fine visual document" - sorry to give such a jejune title to a fine collection of pictures!lol. You were right, makes greater sense - and steeps your sensibility in verbal and picturesque descriptive delights (respectively)- to go through Manasi's last post and this one side by side!
That's all I have for now, my friend! See you around!
hahaha.. srini my friend, glad that ploy worked. as you might have noticed, eyefry wasn't too pleased by it. anyways, thanks for stopping by :)
Interesting to know.
