"Who do you think buys the stones that I bring out? Dreamy American girls who all want a storybook wedding and a big shiny rock. Just like the ones they see in the advertisements of your politically correct magazine. So please, don't come here to make judgments on me, all right?"
- Leonardo Di Caprio, Blood Diamond
Ironic really, because this movie is so politically correct you want to throw up all over the politically correct buttered popcorn - the hero who battles (successfully) with his darker side, and sacrifices himself for the Cause, the beautiful white woman, who symbolises the hope of the brave new generation of Americans who will save the world, and the black African man who is given just about enough importance in the film so that noone can say the movie isn't about the plight of black men in Africa, but not too much that he would get in the way of the Real Story, which is of course Leo and Jenny.
Anyway this post isn't about Blood Diamond. Well, not just Blood Diamond. It's about all the movies about Africa and the Middle East, emanating from Hollywood in the recent past. I have seen about 5 or 6 of them, and i'm sure they were a few more. I'll just make a list, and do add to them if you think i've missed out on any:
1) the constant gardener,
2) syriana
3) hotel rwanda
4) tears of the sun (slightly older, but anyway)
5) blood diamond
6) babel
and the soon to be released film based on Daniel Pearl, who's name i cannot remember.
I think it's a sign of hope that people are taking interest in the issues, and that these films have won oscars, and we can make plenty of jokes about it, but Angelina's adoption of three African kids is really wonderful.
But it truly disturbs me that all of the above movies were absolutely pathetic. Not only do they 'talk down' to the viewer, but they also make every issue so melodramatic and unbelievable, that at the end of the day they are nothing but cheesy formulaic films. Of course, its about a 'real issue' so the critics can't really diss it whole heartedly, even if it deserves just that.
Allow me to elaborate.
I class the films broadly in two categories. The constant gardener and syriana roughly fall under one category, while blood diamond, babel and tears of the sun fall under the other.
The first category (constant gardener, syriana) are films that attempt to explain the intricate political, socio-political, economic, and anthropological reasons why africa and the middle-east respectively are such shitholes, caused by the unthinking unfeeling West (more specifically, the White Man).
The movies do raise a lot of questions, which no doubt the filmmakers intended, but the biggest fattest most unignorable question that they raise halfway into the film is... What the fuck is going on?
Because the movies are trying to tell you all the political intricacies, all the various pressures that have made the issue what it is, you just don't know why what is happening... And while I appreciate the challenges of trying to make the common man (i.e. myself) understand all of these things, those films dont even seem to be trying to explain clearly and lucidly what its all about.
I have a feeling that they just don't want to. Those movies are just telling you, you know what, you capitalist pig, sitting in your beautiful apartment driving your beautiful Chevrolet car, you're living off the blood and flesh of people like this. How? Because of the Second Article of the THird Amendment of the Bolivian Consitution which has Revised the law on Detaining Individuals with Refugee Status from a Nation who's Gross Domestic Product is Comparable to A Nation Defined in the Charter of the United Nations as a Developing Country.
In some mysterious way, you (the capitalist pig) are responsible for the Revision of the Article.
And it works! People feel horribly guilty that somehow its their fault that Africans are dying horrible deaths, and go away saying wow, what an enlightening film.
And of course, the filmmakers make money and win Oscars.
The second category (blood diamond, babel, tears of the sun, hotel rwanda) are even simpler. It seems as though they're making wonderful films about the situation in Africa and we should all do something about it, but look again. Both Blood Diamond and Tears of the Sun are about white men who save innocent black people from other horrible black people. Basically.
Blood Diamond seems to be saying that people in the West are responsible for the deaths of Africans (because they bought a pretty stone in a shop) but really, at the end of the day, what is the average American's guilt? Ignorance. Basically he is guilty of ignorance. If he knew that diamonds kill, he probably wouldn't buy it. Right?
On the other hand, the Africans are basically these savage black barbarians performing atrocious cruelties on one another for some ridiculous reason (such as two different tribes like in Hotel Rwanda - they all look black to me, says one character in the film).
Apart from the fact that Blood Diamond was one of the stupidest movies i've ever seen (I mean really, an owner of a huge diamond syndicate coming personally to pick up a diamond from an African when he calls him on the phone? And not checking to see if someone was clicking a photo ten yards away?)
I also feel that a huge injustice is being done to the African populace. I mean, when the black African threatens to kill the child unless he gets the diamond, his eyes glint with malice and cruelty and barbarism, but when the white man does the same (Leo's superior) he does it with a tired shrug of the shoulders as if to say 'you leave me no other choice'.
Even that aside, none of the films in the second category offer any kind of insight, any of the reasons behind why these people are killing each other. Why? Are people so mad as to simply start hacking each other with scary looking scimitars, and chopping off the breasts of the women?
The problem with not explaining this is - then all you're implying is that - oh, they're mad Africans. Or TIA (This is Africa) - mad bloody place. Not worth expecting them to be human.
What I want is some balance. I want these films to explain to me what's going on. I want some insights into the situation.
Is it possible to make movies like that?
Of course it is! Watch Cry Freedom. Movie about apertheid in South Africa - it doesn't skip any of the gory details, nor does it talk down to the audience. It explains everything that went on during that period in South Africa, and it explains why all of those things happened, and its gripping, depressing, uplifting, and has some of the finest acting I've ever seen - Mr Denzel Washington. Need I say more.
For fuck's sake, no more Oscar winning flicks.

agree completely about the Blood Diamond. was such a condescending movie. also, wtf was up with Leo's accent?? thought it was a terrible performance.
you're right. i really can't think of any film that presents a balanced view/insight into the situation. seen only 1, 2 and 5 of the films you've listed though.
i heard moolade is a pretty good film. african made. and perhaps the last king of scotland will turn out well...
that pearl film is 'a mighty heart'..have expectations for that one too..is a michael winterbottom film.
I think I must disagree with you on Babel, which didn't try to put any spin on politics. Rather, it spoke insightfully (and with oodles of black humour) on simple human prejudices and how we have a tendency to blow things out of proportion. Again, you didn't really comment on Babel, so I'd be interested in knowing how and why you slotted it in the Blood Diamond category. Blood Diamond itself, though entertaining in some ways, was too horribly cliched to stand adequately for anything realistic.
p.s. from last year's films on race tensions and politics, there were also Crash, Munich and Jarhead that deserve mention in your list.
p.p.s. let's not confuse the Oscars with cinematic high standards. The Oscars are a promotional vehicle for the American film industry, plain and simple. And it has a huge following among the masses because of all the glitter and stand up comedy and designer ballgowns. The industry people themselves admit as much...
HEY....
good review writing...
antickpix,
ya man... awful bloody movie. i'm suddenly wondering if this issue was worth such a long post.. oh what the hell.
those movies were really crap.
eyefry,
i guess you do have a point. when i watched babel i thought it was morbid and pointless, but when i went away, i realised it was about how paranoid the world has become about terrorism, and the fallout of the 9 11 incident. but what was the japanese bit about? and those kids lost in the desert? apart from the main plot, for me the rest of it was just two hours of unentertaining morbidity.
steve,
thanks, but the gentlemen whose comments precede yours are probably better at it than me...antickpix for his sheer knowledge of the world of cinema, and eyefry for his analytical ability.
yes boys, you now have to comment at least twice each again for those compliments.
haven't seen as many movies as antickpix....but yes, blood diamond was average. and the effed up osacrs are a facade thru n thru......i hate america
y-shoe... well, who doesn't? hehe.
Ah, I was hoping this would turn into a nice discussion. Let's pretend, to set the mood, that we're each sipping a large single malt :)
Firstly: your praise is very generous and I am most undeserving of it. (There. Now that I've done my bit for modesty... :P)
2. Babel is a bit more multilayered than the morbidity, I think. At a base level, of course, the film is simply trying to connect people across nationalities, boundaries, ethnicities and classes. This, in a sense, seems easy enough, as all you need to do is focus on the emotional angle to get at the core human perspective (much like that totally pseudo Crash). But Inarritu goes one step further and uses the aforementioned boundaries and differences to highlight the little endearing and embarrassing flaws and eccentricities that make us all similar. He connects people in the way they treat outsiders (who deserves hospitality vis a vis who deserves suspicion), in the way they treat their children, the way they behave within and without their families, the way they behave inside and away from their homes, the way they behave when pushed into a corner and, finally, the way they deal with loss of life and -- this, really, is the clincher -- loss of innocence.
Every region that the movie spans has the following commonalities (aside from being linked through escapist characters who travel across borders to forget their worries and to leave behind their own perceivedly dull realities) - kids who suddenly and painfully grow up, parents who don't understand the consequences of their petty little actions and prejudices (proving once again that adults are only bigger, more dangerous versions of their chidren), the media that creates epic melodramas out of simple misunderstandings, and -- the two little things that most successfully override all our little masks and social filters -- eros and thanatos: love and death.
In this regard, again, you should prolly look at Babel in the context of Inarritu's previous two feature-length films. It's the third in a trilogy (after Amorres Perros and 21 grams) that deals principally with death and relationships, their various manifestations and the toll they take on people.
3. This is neither here nor there, but one of the things I like the most about Inarritu's films is his fantastic use of negative space. His silences speak libraries.
Shit, was that too long?
right... how would it be if i just said 'i agree' and stopped at that?
well, that is very well argued.. and yes, it is true, some touches were exquisite, especially the way pitt offers that guy money, which is almost insulting, really. a typically western gesture - throw money at the third world country and all is ok.
lots of touches like that, i thought the jap actors - all of them - were superb. that cop, the father and the girl..
but for me, (and this is just for me) i am very tired of the 'vignette' approach, just showing the viewer random excerpts of life. i increasingly view any work of art in any medium as something that has to add value to my life. why should i go and sit in the theatre for two hours? to be entertained? to learn something? maybe to just escape from the boredom of everyday life?
for me babel didn't achieve any of these things. i just felt like it was a waste of time and money.
sorry about that.
LOL. How about if I just said "to each his own" and just stopped at that?
Maybe I will :D
i saw cry freedom. agree completely.
and, so refreshing to see denzel washington act again (well, since it's an old movie..not really). wish he'd stop slumming in these sleazy thrillers.
eyefry - fair enough!
antickpix - yes. all time low was virtuosity. two oscar winners if you please...
actually i didn't see much more than bits of it, but it looked, from that quickscan, bloody awful.
wasn't cry freedom great though? i think it was a UK production, which makes a difference, in my opinion, because they understand what subtlety is. hollywood's idea of subtlety is to add a subtle touch, and then put a huge big sign next to it saying "HERE IS A SUBTLE TOUCH!"
he did do good work after virtuosity..which was..'95 or something (Crowe hadn't won his Oscar then though), but lately, stuff like Deja Vu, Man on Fire...seems to be stuck in a rut after Training Day.
The only problem i had with CF was that once Denzel was killed off, the film sagged a bit. More Biko was required.
Angelina Jolie/mother white earth save your soul? I don't think so.
21 grams was all right. In general, really tired of Hollywood's liberal largesse. Though, in that genre, I don't mind Soderbergh's Traffic (superb performance by Benicio del Toro) and Blow (decent).
Last King of Scotland may be ok, though I fear mannerisms may eclipse all.
My new credo!
I prefer Mother White Earth with dangerously subversive though in reality boringly tame past for our Angie...am rambling
Abhinav, Gotu says hi
I do agree that the movies mentioned in the blog are not top grade, but they were attempts to introduce the issue not provide a complete treatise on the what, when, how of it. Blood Diamond at least had a good run, and it was mainly because it didnt complicate the story a lot. When you make a movie, you can make a 10-hr one to provide all the world's viewpoints and solutions and I bet that will not even be seen by the producers themselves. There is only so much creativity that can be infused if money comes into the picture. I mean, are you trying to say that half the world knows about the drug testing(Constant Gardener) and blood diamonds that these films should start exploring all the viewpoints.
What makes me laugh is the way in which you guys find ecstatic pleasure in bashing away anything American. I mean any comments on Indian movies?? I dont think so, because you have dont even see any hope there. Get real man. It was like this desi guy I was talking to the other day who insisted that a purely uncommercial movie should be made about (St.)Thyagaraja and his life to show how great he was. My answer was, "well, you know very well no one isnt going to, why dont you invest money and make it?". To which his answer was, "Why should I ? I am not a film maker."
anonymous,
i'm not really too keen on defending indian movies, because most of it is rubbish, if you ask me.
but at least there's no pretension there - they're telling you, we're gonna give you 3 and a half hours of sentimental romance with plenty of songs in the middle, so people like me don't touch them with a barge pole.
movies like blood diamond, on the other hand, claim to be trying to change the world, and the perception of africa and all of that, and for me, it falls short.
also, this post isn't about the quality of films - i'm not a film critic, and i dont think i ever will be. its more about the attitude behind these films. i feel we need to shed our politically correct exteriors and get to the root of the matter.
also, about america bashing - i'll stop doing it the day america no longer deserves to be bashed.
f2f,
sorry for the ultra late response, and yes, i liked traffic... i've seen it thrice, and found new layers each time.
maybe experimented a bit too much with cinematic technique.. but then, as i've mentioned somewhere, i'm no film critic.
and what a coincidence, just picked up blow yesterday! bit late, no?
and so cool... gotu.. i wish i could meet all these people. seriously.
Abhinav,
I am just curious as which trailer or ad claimed that Blood Diamong et al is eye-opener to Africa. I watch trailers and ads in US and I am yet to come across your 'statement'. The movies mentioned were purely commercial movies - please do look at the distribution companies behind these movies. I am happy that at least these companies came up with a plot that concerns Africa in these movies.
On a parallel note, consider an average Indian cricket fan, do you think hes following the current world cup(after India is kicked out). Its the same spin when it comes to Hollywood movies - you need a white english speaking hero to get an audience. Comon, even the Last King of Scotland needed a Scottish doctor.
As to American bashing, I am sorry about that. Theres nothing that can be done to help you guys. Its the same answer I have for muslims who keep pointing to Israel to every problem they have in life. Ever considered looking at your backyard?? Oh yeah, I forgot, its full of shit, and hence nobody needs to clean it.
I saw that you are a journalist, an Indian one at that. I understand that its not the most romantic job but I feel that its a responsible one. I hope that you paint a picture of hope rather go on a increase-circulation rampage. Good luck.
anonymous,
i still feel that movies like blood diamond get nominated for oscars on the strength of them being about sensitive issues, but ok, lets assume it sells itself as simply a drama, and they picked the backdrop of Africa randomly, because it offers all the necessary elements for a nice juicy thriller.
however, having picked such an issue, i believe that you have to deal with the issue with a certain degree of sensitivity, because in mainstream cinema, the whole world is watching, and forming opinions on a particular situation based on what you show them.
about america - i never said india is a dream place, in fact if you look at my other posts, i have as much criticism for my own country as i do for any other.
Once again, i have nothing personal against the US, and i am not one of those people who get ecstatic pleasure out of US bashing, in your words.
Its just that i pick up the paper everyday, and read one more article that makes me want to cry for its injustice, and it usually has to do with the US. Plus, if there's 'shit in my backyard', then its my problem. The US keeps its backyard clean, and messes with the backyards of other nations. Then it becomes mine, and everyone's problem, right.
As for my career as an Indian journalist, well, i think its way beyond your understanding, mate.

In biology, sex is black homemade sex videos
a process of combining and mixing indian nude sex
genetic traits, often resulting xxx free family sex
in the specialization of organisms into college coed sex
a male or female variety (known as a sex). Sexual reproduction involves combining specialized cells (gametes) to form offspring celebrity sex tapes iphone
that usa sex guide grand rapids
inherit traits from both parents. Gametes can be identical in form and function (known as isogametes), but in many cases an asymmetry has evolved sex stories free post
such that two sex-specific types of gametes (heterogametes) exist: male good luck chuck sex scene
gametes are small, virgin has sex
motile, and optimized to transport their genetic information over a distance, while female gametes are large, non-motile and contain best sex tubes
the nutrients necessary for the early development of the young organism.
An organism's sex is indian anal sex
defined by the gametes it produces: males produce male adult sex quest games
gametes (spermatozoa, or sperm) while females produce female gametes (ova, or egg cells); individual organisms which produce both male and female sex porn videos
gametes are termed hermaphroditic. Frequently, physical differences are associated with the different sexes of an organism; these sexual dimorphisms can reflect the different reproductive pressures the sexes experience.

Everybodyporno amateur argentino heard rumours free older women porno videos about womenfree porno downloads faking orgasms. Is that true? The majority of women have young homemade porno tubes faked at least one orgasm, yet some fake almost all of them. Why do they do that? Therered hot porno are many reasons and the case is that there's porno hub popularity no one to blame.
The most hardcore porno trailers for adults common are two top 40 nude russian teen porno websites reasons: theyporno gay animal don't want to make their partners feel bad kitty asian porno or they are tired and just want to end sex. Most females say that their partners arindian video porno e not satisfied until thefree video porno de noelia girls feels orgasm, there's only one way to make them feel happy and stop thefree teen porno pics exhausting procedure - fake.
Another free porno video directory reason is that avintage interracial porno typical female anime porno doesn't seek for orgasm; she desires a sexual large white men & black women porno relationship only because she wants intimacy. Still, such an attitude may make her partner feel bad. first gay anal free porno The only way out is to filme porno cu romance fake it out.
indian porno tube Some women never really experience orgasm while making sex, but they want their partner to feel good about himself and her. Men usually expect women to have pleasure, that's why females have no other choice. They have to fake to have a good relationship.
Loss of interest, having sex only because the partner wants to, also makes women to fake. Most females talk to their friends about such things and while they know other women act it, they do so too, because it's an easier way to have a good relationship.
That is very good comment you shared.Thank you so much that for you shared those things with us.Im wishing you to carry on with ur achivments. All the best.
