Dude, where's the partaaaaaaay?!?!?

The Chennai social scene is utter rubbish. And I'm not saying that in the manner of those Punjabi stud-boys with the bright stretch shirt that shows his (lack of) muscles - 'oh does everything here shut at midnight???' sort of way.
let me explain - the two places where most young socialites congregate are a) coffee shops for the college kids/ones who dont get perm to stay out beyond nine and b) pubs and/or beachhouse parties.

Lets take coffee shops first. The place is bursting at the seams with teeny boppers and not in a good way. You have either these guys with sleeveless basketball jerseys and plenty of stubble (no doubt theyve been shaving thrice a day since the 8th grade to achieve the effect) sprawled all over one chair, or girls with horrendously straight hair, dangerously low jeans, and tops that just show a hint of navel. This is the default. No doubt some of them try to be a little more subtle (tho I personally have never encountered this species) while some of them are all out dangerous - I remember one girl walking into the loo at Ispahani centre clad in a salwar, and coming out with a bright red t-shirt with two black hand imprints on the chest, and the words 'hands off!' below. I'm not a prude, but aren't we just a little loud for two o' clock in the afternoon, honey?
The conversations ... sheesh... horrible.. Now don't get me wrong I'm not the type who listens in to whats being said at the next table - not because of some great moral objection, but because the convos are so boring i'd rather watch F1 with the volume turned down (have you ever tried that? without the commentator hype, half the [so called] excitement is dead).
It so happens I was at Mocha one day with a friend of mine, and we didn't get a place to sit, except with a friend's teenage brother and his gang of friends. The boy is actually a really nice kid, but the conversation... well, i will let you judge for yourself:

teenage boy (TB): So, Abhinav, when did you start dating?
Me: Uh?
TB: As in when did you first start going out with a girl?
Me: I dont know, 11th or 12th standard maybe (which is a rank lie, btw, but i couldnt appear like a loser in front of these kids).
TB: Well, you know, TB2 (forget his name) started in 6th!

I look at TB2. He's wearing a sleeveless basketball jersey, his chin is generously splattered with stubble, and he is sprawled carelessly across his chair.

And then there's the beachhouse parties. The people there are the ones who dressed like the teeny boppers at coffee shops five years ago, and have now graduated to halter tops, when it comes to the girls, and either t-shirts or shirts for the guys. But the colours, the swagger, and the stubble remains the same.
The conversation is slightly worse. At least the teenagers are wannabe. These people are downright idiotic. First conversation:

Idiot: So where's your drink?
Me: Just getting one
Both of us laugh perfunctorily. Later on we bump into each other again. If i don't have a drink in my hand, it's:

Idiot: So where's your drink.
Me: Just getting one.
Idiot: What is this? Next time I see you you better have one.
Me: Ha ha ha... (under my breath) loser.

And if I have a drink:

Idiot: So how many drinks down are you?
Me: This is my third...
Idiot: What? I'm down ten already! And I'm not even buzzing.

And this while swaying perilously everytime he moves.
If you actually brave a conversation with one of these guys, it'll go something like this:

Me: So what do you do?
Idiot: I work in my father's business.
End of conversation.

And the girls are, if possible, even worse. If they are not interested in you, they usually give you the cold shoulder and stare in the other direction when you're introduced. If they are interested in you and want you to ask them to dance, they usually give you the cold shoulder and stare in the other direction when you're introduced.
And if you do manage to get to talk to them, and then finally dance with them, depending on their stage of inebriety, they would either chat politely or grind you all over the dance floor, press their bodies really close to you, which is all perfectly normal, but try anything slightly further (which I actually haven't, because for me personally, I have to be hundred percent sure the girl is reciprocating, cos I hate the idea of being rejected) and they'll draw away or say, "It's so hot, lets go stand outside for awhile."
In any case, there's a strong possibility you may not see her again for the rest of the party.The next saturday night, when you see her again, you say hi, and typically her response would be to give you the cold shoulder and stare in the opposite direction.
Or the moment of realisation could come the same night, when you see her dancing similarly with some other guy. And then she'll cheerfully introduce you to that guy too.

And finally, there's a standard line that everyone gives everyone. No party is complete if someone hasn't said to you:
"I'm so sick of the Chennai party scene. You see the same faces again and again."

Abhinav,

Yours is the second blog I am commenting after this high profile security mix up. And what an edifying and laughably enlightening article to return to blogging! Kudos.

I don't know much of the party scene in Chennai and don't intend though there's nothing didactic about my stance. I am that way; less of an explorer really. But the point you made about coffee shops and beach house parties - the former especially for I have had first hand experience of it - is satirically true. I was arguing with a friend about these coffeeshops - an MBA grad minus obviously the studs et al, who defends these cubicles, which will give you cramps all over the body for 'atmospheric' reasons and decency. When I tried to make him understand the point that I am not against 'anything per se' but the fact that these money-bins are becoming compulsive on the youngsters, he gave a stiff upper lip as if to suggest you can't hang out at Muniyandi Vilas.
That was the day when I realised the cheery truth of so many of your arguments - we are an extreme lot and can't think midway. And I can hear someone say neutrality is sin. Possibly a gentleman whose name when abbreviated becomes G.W.B!

nice :) and too true...

srini,
thanks man... but truly i see what you're saying - these things are fads, there's no such thing as having a good thing in small doses. we have to have excess of it so that surfeiting, the appetite may sicken and die. pretty soon, mocha would be replaced by somthing else which would be in turn replaced by something else.
i think we are a nation of bandwaggoners.

divya,
thank you.. i thought this post might be more to your palate :)

sachin said...

Very interesting and well written. I came to your site from Sriram's.

Divya said...

my views on these fads are way too strong...i'd rather not comment :)

Nice one Abhi.

Relieved to know I haven't missed anything all these years, expect encountering girls "with horrendously straight hair and dangerously low jeans", whose natural inclination seems to be to give everyone the cold shoulder and stare in the opposite direction!

Of course, I too am sick of the Chennai party scene!

jan said...

Hey... yay, you updated! :D

Well as I've been guilty of "hanging out" a lot at one of those much detested coffee shops, I dunno what to say. Sorry, perhaps? Lol.

The reason they're so popular, I guess, is because some of them are a) cheap b) and c) air conditioned. Good reasons to go there instead of college!

Now I'm sure your opinion of me has gone down a few notches so I'll just run away and hide my face, shall I? Hehe...
:))

jan said...

that was b) noisy...

Abhinav,

I am particularly fond of the word bandwagon in a repellant way ever since I read Lincoln's famed letter to his son's school headmaster... but let's give the benefit of doubt... not all are bandwagoners! I know a couple of bloggers - apart from you and that's no flattery - who don't seem like bandwagoners!!! lol

sachin said...

I've realized why you write so well. I hadn't looked at your profile info earlier. Very nice post about the party scene in Chennai. The last time I came to India I was shocked to see how much things have changed. Most of these clubs have these rich kids throwing money like it means nothing to them and many of them are students. I've been working in the US for some time and even though I make a reasonable amount of money, this sort of lavish lifestyle is definitely something new to me. I've been to bars etc. in the US but I was totally out of place in the Indian clubs.

Abhinav, interesting post man. but i object to ur views on the girls ... yes yes just coz i am a girl and i simply just hav to stand up for them. no matter what. why boys dont give girls the cold shoulder or what? seriously ... dont they? esp the ones who r so full of themselves. to girls who r pretty coy or pretty and coy. why is this cold shouldering a femal phenomenon. i dont think so.

btw, havent seen much of hte blore party scene here. but am sure its pretty much the same. smoky, pretty drunk and wannabe ... yeah the cold shoulders too ;-) yes, so true the money throwing bit someone commented upon.

ok saturday morn i come early to work to do soem work. .

Abhinav said...

@sachin,
thanks man, and ya, the amount of money thats spent borders on obscene. i know one guy who spent 15k on one night. its ridiculous! when your dad is earning pots its ok i guess.
but to be honest, i dont mind that so much. you do whatever you want with your money. when it affects me directly, thats when it pisses me off! like these kids asking me what make my watch is. THAT bothers me. what the fuck is his problem???
lol.. sorry, got a little worked up.
and hey, thanks for the compliment! one can never get enough of that.

@divya,
fair enough... in fact i think thats better, because even tho i make fun of all these party people, i still do go out with them, so we would probably get into a royal fight!

@sriram,
you're much better off man. i sometimes wonder, if my upbringing had been any different - by which i dont mean my parents, but the friends i grew up with - would i have moved around in circles with a lot less hypocricy and a lot more genuine enjoyment of each other's company. i don't know, and i guess i'm not destined to know.

@jan,
you get me wrong - i have no objection to coffee shops themselves. in fact i love going down to anokhi and reading the newspapers sipping a cup of coffee.
what i object to tho, is the fact that if there are other people around, they may look at me askance cos i'm sitting alone. its the 'social' aspect of coffee shops that piss me off.
and coffee shops are cheap? come on... 40 bucks for a cappuccino as opposed to a far better cup of kumbakonam degree coffee for 8 rupees at sangeeta.

@the rest of the commentors
just going for lunch be right back at u guys heh.

Divya said...

actually i've no issues with coffee shops or partying per se...what bugs me is the majority of the people who visit these places seem to live in a unreal world..where life's all about wearing the skimpiest of clothes and drawing as much attention as possible, not to forget air kissing and the lah-di-dah talk...but then i guess it's part of the game and i treat myself to their ridiculous antics and laugh cheapy at their expense :)

Bharat said...

Abhinav. The post warmed my heart since I feel Rs 8 for a cuppa coffee at Saravana Bhavan is highly priced, even though I have it 5 times a week. But my point is, 'why go to these parties?'

Abhinav said...

srini,
sure, thanks, but generally, we are a nation of bandwagoners. if one group of people do well in their MBA, suddenly everybody wants to do an MBA. if one IT company is successful, hundreds of them spring up all over the country.
Sure, the IT industry is doing well right now, but remember the bubble bursting in 2000-2001? If that happens again, this country is screwed.

swetha,
im sure some guys do it to, but the cold shoulder phenomenon is, i think, predominantly female. there's this fantastic unwritten rule in the social scene here (and maybe everywhere else) that the girl sits tight and lets the guy do all the running around if he wants to get to know her.
personally, i cant be bothered, honestly.

divya,
yes, the attention-seeking is nauseating sometimes... but then i think we're kind of defeating the purpose by even looking at them and laughing - cos in the end, they're getting the attention either way.

Jan said...

i meant cheap in comparison to, say, movies or any of the eat-outs. but yeah, i guess the average tea-kadai WOULD be cheaper! :D

Abhinav said...

@bharat,
fair enough... its a good question. everyone says they're bored with the party scene in chennai, but everyone goes for it anyway.
i guess i fall under that category.
but i still want to complain about it. ridiculous, eh?

abhorigine said...

bharat, you couldn't be more right, but eight rupees for coffee at saravana bhavan is well spent, i think. unfortunately, my opinion doesn't count does it? wrong age!

Anonymous said...

guess girls want to be wooed. and men are just meant to woo. is this also a social rule? anyways, am outta that circuit. been wooed, hav wooed.. basically wooed out. kinda miss the action. :-)
tcha tcha abhinav i didnt think u had a prob running around ;-)and am shocked that u arent "bothered personally." achoo what happ to u man? ;-)
- S

Abhinav said...

@abhorigine,
well, i think its also about the ambience and a chance to meet everybody else in town, and a chance wear basketball jerseys if youre a guy and low jeans if you're a girl... perhaps not worth 32 rupees, but there it is!

@swetha,
fair enough... its a social rule, its just a lot more remarked at these parties. i guess i dont have a problem with running around, but it gets tiresome after some time... i'm really really tired of it.

Srini said...

Abhinav,

I like your candour... perhaps because I am nowhere in the firing line... lol...

Yup... I never hate people, but only their deeds! This whole IT-boom, MBA Business and rest-bust doesn't make one whit of sense to me. They polarise the world, what for? As you say I think ours is the only country where everyone's mad after the word 'scope'. There rarely seems to be an inner conviction or penchant, and if there happens to be, a host of factors like society, family, (and for people like us tam bram relatives and next of kins), friends and peers will somehow nip it in the bud!

Sudhir said...

Haha...

Hats off...buddy. That was awesome!

You are now officially in the "effulgent" club.

Yup...its always, " Where is yr drink, what are you drinking or what time is this place going to shut". Im sick of it.

Whats the plan tonight...btw. :-)

Abhinav said...

@srini,
oh boy, you should know by now not to mention 'tam bram' in my vicinity its a trigger that makes pour forth an invective to burn the ears of the hardest... but yes.
on the other hand, doing something unusual, like literature, is all the more gratifying in a society which frowns upon anything thats not engineering or MBA - if you''re a rebel at heart like i am, that is. :)

@sudhir,
lol... that comment is as good as anything tho i think you left out "this place is so fuckin' packed".
and with the sunday morning hangover happening after an ecr party the previous night, i feel a bit stupid to be honest.

and oh, yes, the boxers thing. i so hope that goes out of fashion. its terrible! and means investing in CK so i cant even join these clowns at it.

HAHA, this one was hilarious dude!!seriously, i can relate to all of that, especially where every place we used to go quietly sit for a coffee suddenly got infested with the teens because the "older" ppl went there and "accidently" mentioned it in a conversation and then it all becomes cool..amethyst becomes MOCA, then the real Moca shows up so they are confused and so on..i dont even want to talk about the party scene, sharon and i went to bikes a couple of days back, i died laughing!

u stole my idea!! or the idea u gave me...but whatever i thought all the blogs were shut down...apparently not..u know how i feel about coffee shops so lets not go there....but when it comes to partying it's the people whom you're with that matter...but to be on the safe side...i always bring a book...and next time i hear 'maaann...i'm sooo smashed' i ignore them and read instead....mean..i know..

@yogi,
yr right man, what is the deal with all these kids?? I see girls who were five, six years my junior at these coffee shops dressed in a way my contemporaries would scorn to dress in..
i'm caught between laughing at them and secretly wishing i were 5 years younger than i am.

@lakshmi,
you take a BOOK to a party???? My god, that's a first for me. Never heard of that happening.. has noone taken it from you and stomped on it in a drunken frenzy? or thrown it into the pool? If not, very surprised!
and as for the plagiarism thing... you took your own sweet time over it so :P

Actually enjoy the eye candy when I do go to these places 4-5 times a year. am not really complaining. Since I was not trying to converse with these kids, what they said to each other neither interested me nor bothered me.

at least not till my 14 year old daughter said she wanted to go to Mocha with her buddies.....

Lakshmi said...

well....it hardly happens cos i almost never actually have a 'bad' time at a party...but on a few rare occassions i manage to slip away....read for a bit and then head home....actually this all depends on whether I'M drinking or not....lol

Hey,
Looks like I know more about Martians than the Chennai party scene. Anyway, thanks for the enlightening post. Seems like I haven't missed anything.
In defence of the girls, (I can see you frowning), they were probably just cock-eyed.
And finally, it's definitely more intersting watching Chennai's crawling traffic than F1 in mute.

as for your daughter... ouch... it cant be easy reading this post when you have a daughter that age! but anyway, since yr happily sight-adichifying, its ok.

@lakshmi
yes thats teh problem - unless you have a couple of drinks, these places are truly inane. and youve never had a bad party experience? i should tell you about last saturday night - its worthy of a blog actually, but i'm too lazy, and my dad reads it :D

@nandita
"it's definitely more intersting watching Chennai's crawling traffic than F1 in mute."
hello! you're a sports reporter!!!

Exactly why I'm saying this. The real thrill of F1 is in the vrooom, zoom, and the screeching commentators ready to sacrifice their sense of speech every single minute.

my theory is - its because mankind in general and indians in particular are big hypocrites. so u can either accept it and try to get laid as per the norms of society, or refuse to accept and be anti-establishment and hope that u run into someone with similar views.
i suspect u should do the latter. it seems more yr kind of thing.

If you DO intend on just hanging loose and taking in the music and booze in your own mind space...you may get a lot more out of it.

Abhinav said...

nandita,

reflextion,
thanks for the advice... but basically, it isnt just about scoring - its about the people you meet, who have zero conversation.
is it about taking in the music and booze in your own mind space, as you put it?
isnt the first thing people we know say after a party 'oh i knew so many people there' - it's basically about the people. and as i mentioned earlier, the people suck.
