Che Sa!
This is about Jet Li. The reason why I put up this post is cos I saw five of his movies last week. That's right, five! And then, it became one of my periodic obsessions, which still hasnt ended, so I actually went to jetli.com (man, i'm becoming more and more like a teenage schoolgirl everyday) and read up all his interviews.
Anyways about those five - Kiss the Dragon, Danny the Dog (right, not too good on the movie titles, but anyway) i had on dvd, so i watched both one lazy sunday afternoon. Then, unwilling to relinquish the comfortable chair in front of the tv, i was flipping channels, and bang! romeo must die was playing... Then the next day, surfing at night, 'Meltdown!' came on Star Movies, and then the next day i was considering picking up Cradle 2 the Grave and guess whats on HBO that evening!
I know a sign of God when I see one.
I think it should start with Romeo Must Die, which is his best, I think. The movie is a take on Romeo and Juliet, of course, and instead of the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets you have a Chinese family and a black family in the American underworld battling for supremacy around the waterfront, with members from either family being killed, sparking off the war, like in the source text. There's even a variation of a balcony scene somewhere there!
Besides, the ghetto/Chinese combination is way cool, and the final showdown fight sequence is fuckin awesome. And lets not forget, Aaliyah is pretty damn hot.
Apparently after that movie his fans bombarded him emails saying the fight scenes were not good (sheesh, they seemed pretty ok to me!) so he made a movie with French director Luc Benson (?) Kiss the Dragon, with much more hardcore scenes, a lot of ground skirmishes, and no wires suspending the actors midair to make it look impressive, as was becoming the norm in Hollywood. I think on the whole, they succeeded, with the scene to watch out being the bit where Jet's in the police station (in the movie, he's battling with a corrupt police commissioner in France), being chased by less important cops with guns, and he runs into a room and locks the door to escape them. He turns around, and there's a martial arts class going on - 20/30 cops in robes, practising their punches or whatever. And of course, he takes them all on and beats the shit out of them, and boy is it good to watch!
Danny the Dog - wierd wierd movie, the bad guys kind of remind me of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels... atrociously violent in a wierdly funny way. The fight sequences in this are not that great..... very very gruesome, but still, i guess kudos to Jet for taking on a really unusual (bizarre is more like it) role.
Cradle 2 the Grave... I don't like DMX!!!
Meltdown - Chinese movie = strange sense of humour = good fun if you're in a kind of mood.
But still, my fav. scene from Jet Li is the cult scene from Lethal Weapon 4 when he first burst onto Hollywood, where he watches Mel Gibson and Danny Glover go it with his minions, a half smile on his face, and then he takes a hand in the fight and simply goes berserk. How must that have been when the movie first came out, and noone really knew him? I would nominate it best action sequence ever, easy. And Craig dammit, your dvd gets stuck correctly at that point! i HATE you.
I had done a story for Madras Plus a couple of years back about the 3 kung fu stalwarts, Bruce Lee Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and i totally enjoyed researching it. Bruce of course, has a fascinating life, and the movie about his life - behind the dragon or whatever its called - tho not a great movie in itself - its a true story! Jackie Chan, all his pitiful attempts at comedy in Tuxedo, and reasonably successful attempt at comedy in Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon are deceptive - the boy had a quite a life. In one story, he spoke about an occasion when he and his buddies got into a fight with a motorcycle gang, and at the end of it, he saw something white on his ankle. He thought it was part of his bone, but then when he touched it, he realised it was the tooth of one of the motorcycle guys!
But still, much as those two guys are great, Jet Li is so contemporary, he's - just - cool!
Anyone would want to have the kind of skill he does. BUT then you read up on his life, and you're like... never mind! An awful amount of hard work on top of the fact that he was a prodigy.. not worth! Apparently once he broke his foot, but hid it cos then there would be twice as many exercises for the arms.. and sure enough, his instructor found out he had broken his foot, so another friend used to carry him on his back to practise, and then he would practise with his hands, and then get carried back. Madness.
Couple of interesting facts if you didn't already know it...
1) He was supposed to be the lead in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which is I think common knowledge... but anyway, thank god! All those people flying around the trees.. idiotic movie.
2) He was offered a role in Matrix 2 and 3... and he turned it down! Why is anybody's guess...
3) He's gonna play the Chinese sidekick in the movie verion of the Green Hornet - the TV series in which Bruce Lee made a name for himself! Unfortunately, production has been prorogued for, but I can't hardly wait!

Now, when i make statement saying 'I like Will Shakespeare flicks', it could mean
a. Kenneth Branagh, Lawrence Olivier etc.
or,
b. '10 things i hate about you', 'romeo must die', 'she's the man' (starring disney slave child amanda bynes)
heh.
ooh..i wanna see danny the dog. Bob Hoskins, and the music is by Massive Attack.
Jet Li for Kato!
I loved Bruce Lee in Adam West's Batman..
Holy old tv series batman!
ah.....
Jet Li..
You now make me wanna go see a movie of his..
and to think i was happy with bruce Lee being the KoKF(King of KungFu)
...nice post...
oh...and i just noticed....
"vaishnavi-just a kid"
:D
Thnks...
guess I gotta learn!!!
Jet Li... Hmm, never was a fan of these martial arts-fighty type movies. But since it comes so highly recommended... :D
And Jan-Cute adorable blog? \:-| Hmmmmmmm... Dunno what to say to that! Um... Thank you?
Enter the Dragon man... how can you not know the movie about Life of Bruce! :)
since ppl are collecting the blog tags here,
antickpix - er..
gah!
Yeah, Jet Li's definitely cool. Have you seen Once Upon A Time In China? Crummy story, but great action sequences with some truly scintillating stunts.
Speaking of cool Kung Fu stars, I'd like to throw in three more able candidates: Sammo Hung, Bolo Yeung and Stephen Chow, another hilarious albeit lesser-known trinity...
Kiss of(?) the Dragon was (unintentionally) hilarious. Only Jet Li film I've seen, unfortunately.
Nina -
Ah, true. 'tis Kiss of the Dragon.
Heh..Kiss the Dragon: a 19th century stoner story.
@antickpix,
she's the man??? which is that a take on? twelfth night? merchant of venice? actually come to think of it, very few shakespeare plays without cross dressers, so that title isn't indicative of anything...
and the music on danny the dog is brilliant.. massive attack are very cool.. i think they roped in that singer from everything but the girl for a couple of songs.. or does she sing for them all the time? not hundred per cent sure.
anyways, since you seem to have so much (not too) pent up anger about it, will change the blogroll...
Bruce Lee comes in Adam West's batman? i feel so behind! i didnt know that at all!
we are talking about the nananananananana nananananananana BATMAN! batman right?
@azlan queen,
if you're really gonna watch jet li flicks (and i hope u are! they are sooo cool) i would start with romeo must die. esp. if you're into r&b and the whole ghetto deal.
the blogroll... it was the nubbinectomy man, my creativity has completely disappeared! i couldnt think of anything else to say! i will change that too.. sigh..
@jan
yes! i recommend! the blogroll... it was the nubbinectomy man, my creativity has completely disappeared! i couldnt think of anything else to say! i will change that too.. sigh..
@anand
was talking about the movie based on bruce's life, da... just googled it, its called Dragon: the life of Bruce Lee (i may have got it wrong again, but something like that)... but hey, don't u think 'Behind the Dragon' would've been a cool title for it?
@eyefry
isn't once upon a time the one where his kid gives him advice on women in shit in a RIDICULOUSLY american accent? the dubbing was awful! but yeah, it was a crazy movie, and the action sequences were pretty gruesome if i remember right.
i liked sammo hung tho i'm not too crazy about that tv series.. the one that was a take on rush hour... stephen chow - kung fu hustle was beautifully taken, and i just saw shaolin soccer last night... i dont know, his action sequences are too incredible for me... i mean he kind of borders on spoofing kung fu rather than being an exponent of the art, doesn't he? and plus, chinese humour is tooooo wierd man!
Bolo Yueng?
@nina,
did i say kiss the dragon? maaaan that IS kind of bizarre... even if it had sean connery's voice!
and u didnt like the movie? i thought it was pretty cool...
and welcome to my blog!
antickpix,
there's another movie idea... we can club it with the american cricketer and make one real action packed flick, man! what say?
bolo yueng is the bad guy in bloodsport isn't he?
ah, leave the blogroll. anger spent. :p
yes, 19th century bearded cricketer caught in an underground struggle between stoner cockneys and freemasons.
throw jack the ripper in for a cameo.
and yeah.
nanananananannanananannanan BATMAAAAAAN!!
i LOOOOVE eminem's spoof of that... had me in tears of laughter.
and now i HAVE to change the blogroll... cos i thought of a better one!
gah?
explain..
Bolo Yeung's in a whole buncha chinky-chow-chow pics as either a henchman or a sidekick, much like Sammo.
American Cricketer in Hong Kong! Sounds awesome - I'll make it if you fund it. Speaking of strange amalgams: I'd like to see a Star Trek meets Adam West's Batman meets Walker Texas Ranger. Any takers?
hey! why did u remove that other post? Getting rid of all proof of insanity huh? Well, you cant get away that easy!
Oh, and I wasn't complaining about the blog roll. But yeah, like this one better! Heh...
antickpix,
cos u seem to like saying that... should i switch back to 'er...'? lol. i hope they find my body after the next time we meet.
eyefry,
you want to combine an insanely corny tv show, a tv show where people DISCUSS the bad guys away into the final frontier, and a show which is predominantly watched by middle aged women who remember what chuck norris used to look like? holy disasters, batman!
and vinay verma the director... hmm.. compelling...
jan,
its just that i didnt want eveyrone to know that i listen to the kind of music that the average brit teeny-bopper does.. lol... no issues with anyone thinking i'm insane - prove it, here goes:
WOOOOHOO!
.........
WOOHOO!
.........
WOOHOO!
.........
WOOHOO!
can i be the low rent spock substitute?
i think u should be captain jean lou pickard, with your new hairstyle and everything
Abhinav: Never said I didn't like it! Was highly entertained by it.
Abhinav:
Yes, I do! And not just that, if funded, I promise to make it in Malayalam, Tamil and Thulu.
Antickpix: Sure. Though, as Abhinav points out, your head cries out for Picard.
And Abhinav again: Sorry I'm being obsessive about this, but -
(a) It's Vinayak.
(b) It's VArma, with an 'A', not to be confused with the Punju version.
(c) (while I'm at it..) it's Jean-Luc Picard, though 'Lou' does have a nice Country Western ring to it :P
@nina,
yes but you were laughing at the movie! youre not supposed to laugh at it! i'm taking it very personally (im good at doing that) we should watch it together and i will explain to you why its such a brilliant movie.
@eyefry
er... patrick stewart it is!
and sorry about yr name tho, it can be annoying when ppl spell it wrong, and when your name is spelt wrong on your degree certificate... you're meat! take it from me.
and when do we start shooting? i want to be robin!
But how can one not laugh? Just the sight of that woman towering over Jet-Li is enough to send one into paroxysms of laughter...
Paroxysms. That'd be a great title for our movie (imagine the sequels - "Paroxysms 2: SpaceBat, Texas Stranger", "Paroxysms 3: Attack Of The Ten-Gallon-Hat-Wearing Vulcan Penguin", etc)...
Boys, I think we have a multi-million dollar franchise on our hands!
nina,
i think you're kind of missing the point.. i'm surreptitiously asking u out on a date, girl.
eyefry,
lets have a trilogy of four while we're at it 'paroxysms 4: the next degeneration'
tell u what.perarasu did a jetli-like stunt in the movie,tirupati.and then i spent 2 days in the hospital.
abhinav -
aren't you married..or at least engaged?
tut tut.
sheks,
hmm yes.. i remember a cousin of mine who tried a wwe stunt at home and ended up with six stitches in the forehead. i content myself with waving my hands enthusiastically in the air, without actually getting up from that chair in front of my tv... it really is very comfortable
antickpix,
do i seem the marrying type? *sigh* i think ill end up with the iyer ponnu my mum chooses for me in the end.
hey first time on ur blog...just came across its in blogdom...i havent seen any jet li film..maybe its time i catch one!
Abhinav: Mommy knows best, afterall...
@why am i
heyyyy always welcome a new commenter... and btw, my jet li obsession is officially over, which means a) i will be updating, and b) im not recommending any of his films anymore so if u watch them and hate them - dont curse me!
@nina,
er... ok then! moving on...
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiyaaaa!!!!
aiiiieiieeeeeeeeeeee huaaa!!!!
oh hello... jus practicin my jujitsu.
whaaaaaaaaankkkhaaaa!!!
slam.
wat u thought of kungfu hustle?
jetli playing kato in green hornet? cool! whose playing the hornet and the car whose name i forget?
bruce lee acted in a batman flick? wow man..
now you see, all chinese/jap/people with slit for eyes movies make me roll with laughter. i CANNOT take even one of them seriously.which comes down to the fact that i have no respect for them...disputable point though..
once i saw a movie in which these idiots were throwing giant size cards on each other in the name of war. whatever!!
oh..and I AM THE HOPE OF THE JOURNALISTIC FRATERNITY.. i like it :))
eternal flunky,
who u calling a wanker? huh? huh? i shall retaliate by waving my hands in the air in pointless slicing motions!
i loved kung fu hustle... i mean the humour is wierdass, and the violence is supposed to be funny, but its so not! but the choreography, the backdrops... visually, it was delightful.
divya,
do you even think before you talk? im going to change your blogroll to loudmouth divya
aaaaah...noooo..i like my current name...but i'm just being honest ok...honestly, u cant deny the fact that they're hilarious almost always..
i thought she had already chosen..no?
divya,
fair enough, actually... just was surprised at the phrase 'chinese/jap/people with slit for eyes movies'... bit excessive, i thought. not my cup of tea. but as antickpix and i used up a lot of blog space making fun of the jap accent, i wont comprain velly much.
antickpix,
eh?
i hate to sound ignorant, but sometimes i cant differentiate between chinese, japs and people from the north east..as in i never know which country they belong to... no offence intended..
folget it.
er... people from the north east are kind of... indian?
i knwo they're indian...but they resemble the chinese...now you cant deny that!!
oh and btw, do i irritate you???
no def. not. fair enough, youre honest-er than the rest... its just that my closest friend from BA is from mizoram and it felt a bit wierd :)
well incidentally i've always believed that people from the north east..assam and the rest of the states were harly ever treated as part of the indian sub continent. i mean as a country we're obsessed with delhi, bombay and places in the north. its quite sad that most people wouldn't know the capital of ever half of the states in the east.. they definitely aren't given the importance they deserve...and i'm sorry if i crossed a line there..
another great blog from you guys. i'd point you to mine but it isn't yet the way I'd like it. i do have a website that I think is cool, kind of almost about art denver martial school
Excellent, love it! »
